Maternity Leave

1. Do I have to take a certain 8 weeks of maternity leave around my pregnancy?
Yes, you must take the 4 weeks before your due date and the 4 weeks after it.

2. Do I have to use "sick days" in order to get paid during my maternity leave?
Yes. You are guaranteed the days off but not the pay unless you have the 40 sick days.

3. Can I get disability checks during my maternity leave?
This depends on your coverage. You should check it. If you have a C-section you will have had major surgery, so you will most likely qualify for disability payments.

4. How do I let the Board of Education know I need a maternity leave?
You should notify the Board office in writing once you are sure you will need to take the 8 weeks. You are also given the option of taking child care leave for up to 3 years.

5. Do I get paid during my child care leave?
No, but you can purchase your benefits at the COBRA rate for 18 months.

Please see page 31 of your contract booklet for additional information!

Grievance

1. What issues and kinds of things are grieve-able?
Any violation of the contract that has caused personal loss, inconvenience or injury. Note: You cannot grieve a fellow member, but you can grieve a supervisor or administrator.

2. How do I initiate a grievance?
First check to see if your concern or issue is grieve-able (a violation of the contract, etc.) by going to your Building VP and speaking with them. If they think it is an issue that can be grieved, they will refer you to your building grievance chair. Together you will figure out the best way to deal with your situation. You might set up an appointment with the administrator or supervisor that is responsible and the grievance chair will mediate the discussion to try and resolve the issue at level 1. Remember, there are times that the Association can grieve on your behalf and you don't have to participate in the meeting(s).

3. Is there a statute of limitations?
Yes, you have 20 working days from the time you knew of the occurrence of the issue.
